OUR

LETTER PAGE

Three letters, chosen from the hundreds I get from members of the Magazine Club, the Sunbeam Society and the Famous Five Club – one from each, to show our readers what kind and generous helpers I have! A prize has gone to each.

A letter from Jennifer Bing- ham, Gourock, Renfrewshire.
Dear Miss Blyton,
I thought you would like to hear about our Sale we had in aid of the blind babies. We were frightfully thrilled when we actually made £53. My sister and I have a small club, called the Sunshine Club, and anything that we make out of plays and sales, we send to the blind babies. So far we have sent over £71, and we hope to have another Sale as soon as possible. Daddy had programmes printed for us, and we sold these at 2d. each. We had a White Elephant stall, and a Handwork and Cookery Stalls.
Yours sincerely,
Jennifer Bingham.

(I am glad to print such a good letter from the Sunshine Club of Gourock.)

A letter from Group Leader Jill McWilliam, Hull.
Dear Enid Blyton,
I am sorry we haven’t been able to write to you lately, as we have been working hard for a Sale of Work, for which we earned £12 for the spastics. We hope that it will bring a little happiness to the little children who cannot use their arms or legs. We made money by selling tray-cloths, calendars, soap and lots of other things. I saved two pounds of sweets out of the sweets I have on Saturdays, and put them into lucky bags, and sold those too.
Yours sincerely,
Jill McWilliam.

(Your Group did well, Jill, and you must be proud to be leader of so many first-class club members.)

A letter from Brenda Tresadem and Frances Harradine, Sutton, Surrey.
Dear Enid Blyton,
We are two friends, both thirteen years old. For the past two Christmases we have given each other presents, but this year we had an idea. Instead of giving each other presents, we decided to put our money together and buy a small present for your Children’s Home. It is only small, we know, but we hope it will give a little pleasure to one of your babies.
Love from Brenda and Frances.

(Your letter gave me great pleasure children, and your unselfishness touched me very much.)

Another themed letter page – that’s two in a row. Last time it was children from overseas.

I use an extract the text from the image site when making these posts so when I saw £53 ( and £71) I had to double-check the image, but that is actually what it says. That is a phenomenal amount of money. £53 is somewhere in the region of £1600 today! What were they selling, genuine antiques??

Even the £12 from Jill is a a healthy £375 today. Usually the fund raising letters are talking in shillings, or maybe a pound or two.

Interesting to see that two thirteen year olds were still reading Enid Blyton’s magazine, and presumably her books.
